I can compensate for thin boots with socks if I have to, but socks generally make the swelling worse (the swelling is most likely circulatory in nature, and when the foot is swollen socks exacerbate it).
Also complete a quick check around the outside of your house looking for any nooks and crannies where cold air could be pushing its way inside. Entry points of piping, plumbing and ventilation are common culprits for causing drafts so pay particular attention to these areas and use spray insulating foam to seal any gaps you find.

Thru Hikers: People who set out to hike the entire trail in one journey. Each year several thousand people set out to hike the whole trail and only a few are successful. There is no realiable method to determine success potential in this group. Professionals, retired persons, Joe Plumber, and hobos have all managed to complete the entire trail. The only similarity amongst successful thru hikers are masochistic tendencies.
We cooked up a feast on the gas stove and ate supper by candlelight. The children huddled up for warmth and nibbled chocolate biscuits for pudding, then I slunk off to bed at 9pm with a glass of red and a novel. With the fire crackling in the grate, the maudlin hoot of a solitary owl outside and a rash of stars twinkling through the skylight, our yurt felt cosier than a pixie's pocket.

To avoid getting in accidents make sure you take your time and don drive quickly, even when you on the highway make sure you aren speeding because it very easy to hit a patch of ice and slide out. Often you can even see the ice until you begin sliding on the road so if you in a speeding state then you won be able to control the slide and most likely end up in an accident. You either crash with yourself or with another driver which could become fatal.
